There’s a new thing growing: Green Schools

Have you been hearing about a “Green School”?  Well, it’s a ‘thing’ and it’s growing quickly.

When teachers and students aren’t calling out sick repeatedly – it equates to a better education for the children.  This is the impetus for the “Green School” idea.

It’s been said that going green with your district’s buildings and lawns provides for a healthier environment.  We all know that healthier environments perpetuate healthier people.  Today, the idea of going green is more than recycling. The U.S. Department of Education launched the ED-Green Ribbon Schools award program in 2011.  Subsequently,  over 60 organizations have adopted the basic measurement framework that they present:

  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Increased health and well-being
  • Increased environmental and sustainability literacy for all graduates

There are several things your district can do to create sustainability.  Reducing water waste is an effective tool.  In addition, providing natural light in building assists the healthy development of hormones.  Fewer light bulbs or energy-efficient lends itself to a more efficient energy bill as well.
